VOLCANOES
AS A STUDENT: At least two new ideas you learned about:

o There are four types of volcanoes: cinder cone, composite, shield volcanoes and lava domes.
o A volcano is a mountain that opens downward to a pool of molten rock (magma) below the earth. It’s a hole in the earth for which molten rock and gas erupt from.

One tip you can share for how to read/ navigate the websites you explored
o The Did You Know Tips were helpful because they gave quick knowledge bits.
o The pictures were helpful because they gave a visual.

AS A TEACHER: Describe at least one informational feature you found especially useful and developmentally appropriate for fourth graders studying this topic
o Facts about Volcanoes
http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/Homework/mountains/volcanoes.htm
o Field trip to Mars and Washington
http://www.kidscosmos.org/kid-stuff/kids-volcanoes.html

Internet Workshop Book Activity 6 (part c)
1.The topic that I chose was volcanoes. Two websites that are useful and appropriate for 4th graders are: http://www.kidscosmos.org/kid-stuff/kids-volcanoes.html Volcanoes for Mars and Washington, and http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/Homework/mountains/volcanoes.htm Facts about Volcanoes.

2. For the website titled Volcanoes for Mars and Washington (
http://www.kidscosmos.org/kid-stuff/kids-volcanoes.html) the website tells about the types of volcanoes and the different volcanoes around the world and the galaxy.
o Once on the website, find what the four types of volcanoes are and what makes them unique.
o Why is it important to study volcanoes on Mars and all around the world? What can they tell us about our future?

The website Facts about Volcanoes (
http://www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/Homework/mountains/volcanoes.htm) it gives really good facts about volcanoes, including the history of the name volcano.
o What are the origins of the name volcano?
o As stated on the website, 1 out of 10 people live within the danger zone of an active volcano. Why do you think people choose to live there even though they know it is dangerous?

An activity page developed for Internet Workshop to introduce a unit on Volcanoes

Exploring Volcanoes Internet Researcher: Date: This activity will introduce you to our unit on Volcanoes. You will have an opportunity to explore an important resource on the Internet for our unit. You will learn about the different types of volcanoes and why it is important to study them and think more critically about what you learn on the Internet. In Magic Treehouse: Under the Volcano we learned about Pompeii and the volcano Mt. Vesuvius. The information for the book will help us to understand some of the information about volcanoes that we find on the Internet. Record your answers in your science notebooks.

  1. Go to the bookmark I have set under Wikispaces about Volcanoes. The two websites I have chosen for you are Facts about Volcanoes and Volcanoes from Mars to Washington along with a few others. Read through the two above-mentioned sites along with others to gather information for the questions below. Make sure and take notes to share at the end of the workshop.

  1. Critical Thinking: Be a detective on the websites can you find out why we call a volcano a volcano and not something else? How did you find the answer? What strategy did you use?

  1. The information that we read in Magic Treehouse: Under the Volcano has helped us see how damaging a volcano can be when it erupts. With this knowledge why would people live close to a damage zone around an active volcano?

  1. Your Choice: Visit any of the other websites on volcanoes. Find information that you would like to share with the class that was new to you and maybe new to someone else. Make sure and take notes!
